It is true that educational inequalities exist in America. Not every family can afford to send its students to science exploration camps, buy admissions tickets to science museums, or order chemistry kits online. However, every child should have the chance to explore all the variety of STEM fields, no matter what his or her socioeconomic status is.
The consequence of ignoring the exclusivity of STEM education results in a huge disparity in the professional STEM field. Many students form low-income families do not choose to enter the field because they never have the opportunity to experience STEM education outside of the classroom, in a fun way, with the support of their parents. As our country is moving away from service industries, and closer to science and technology industries, it is important to ensure that our next generation of the workforce has interests and skills that would increase their chances of employment, as well as contribute to the American economy. |
